A Peek Inside My Wedding Invitation Design Process
If you’ve ever wondered what actually goes into designing a custom wedding invitation suite — this one’s for you. My process is thoughtful, collaborative, and intentionally paced to ensure your stationery feels cohesive, elevated, and unmistakably you from start to finish.
Here’s a little peek behind the scenes.
Step One: The Initial Chat
Every project begins with a conversation. Once you reach out, we’ll jump on a call to talk through your ideas, your vision for the day, and the overall feel you’re hoping to achieve. This is where I get to know you — not just your wedding date and venue, but what excites you, what you’re drawn to, and how you want your guests to experience your day.
We’ll also cover the logistics: your wedding date, names, venue, guest count, how you’re collecting RSVPs, and when you’re hoping to send your invitations. From there, I gather everything I need to put together a custom quote tailored specifically to your project.
Step Two: Booking + Paperwork
If you decide to move forward, I’ll send over a contract along with an invoice for 50% of the project total. Once those are taken care of, we officially dive into the design process — and this is where the magic really begins.
Step Three: The Visual Identity Phase
The first design phase is what I call the Visual Identity Phase — and it’s a cornerstone of my process.
This is where I build a family of assets for your wedding, very much like designing a brand for a company. I’ll curate font pairings, colour options, paper swatches, and any illustrative elements or monograms featuring your initials. These elements become the framework for your entire wedding journey.
Starting here is intentional. By defining your visual identity upfront, everything that follows — your invitation suite and eventually your day-of details — feels cohesive and considered. The result is a wedding that feels like one beautifully curated experience, rather than a collection of disconnected pieces.
This phase includes two rounds of revisions, so there’s plenty of room to refine and perfect along the way.
Step Four: Designing the Invitation Suite
Once your visual identity is approved, I move into the design of your actual invitation suite. Based on everything we discussed in our initial call, I’ll present two to three unique invitation suite options using the approved fonts, colours, and materials.
Ahead of this stage, I’ll collect all final wording details — names, dates, locations, RSVP information — along with your guest addresses. I provide a template to make this part easy and organized.
You’re welcome to mix and match elements from the presented designs and suggest revisions. Once everything feels just right, we move toward final approvals.
Step Five: Print Production
Before anything goes to print, I’ll send over print-ready files for your final sign-off (these are different from the earlier presentation designs). Once approved, I’ll send the remaining balance of your invoice, which is due in full before production begins.
Print production typically takes about two weeks. Once everything arrives back to me, I carefully assemble your invitation suites and ship them to you.
While I don’t include postage, I always recommend bringing a fully assembled suite to the post office to be weighed so you can purchase the correct postage with confidence.
Day-Of Details
If you choose to move forward with day-of stationery, I carry your visual identity through to everything else you need — ceremony programs, menus, place cards, table numbers, signage, and more. Using the same fonts, colours, papers, and illustrations ensures your wedding day feels seamless from the moment guests open their invitation to the last detail they see on the day itself.
Day-of timelines vary depending on what’s needed, but the goal is always the same: consistency, cohesion, and a beautifully intentional experience.
My process is always evolving and refining, but at its core, it’s designed to give you space, clarity, and confidence — and to create stationery that feels timeless, personal, and thoughtfully crafted just for you.
